Oysters have grown in the Pyefleet Creek and Colne Estuary, within the Fishery, since soon after the last Ice Age and well before the Romans invaded Britain in 54AD. But the Romans were the first to start commercially rearing them. And the appreciation of these almost mythical molluscs has not waned in the 2000 years since. We still grow oysters in the same waters that the Romans did, overlooked by the Fishery building; and our Oystermen are proud to be continuing the tradition of sending the finest oysters to every corner of this country as well as to many other parts of the World.
Oysters can be kept chilled for 5 days from dispatch; ensure they are covered by a damp cloth and ideally place a weight on top of them. Indicators that you should not eat the oysters are if they sound hollow when tapped against one another, if their shells are gaping or if they don’t smell fresh, like the sea.
Our oysters are packed in 12’s, 25’s or 50’s.
Oysters are also a very good source of Vitamins: A, B, D and E.
