Colchester Oyster Fishery

Colchester Oyster Fishery is one of the United Kingdom’s leading suppliers of fresh shellfish. Established in 1964, to grow and supply the Colchester Native Oyster and Rock Oysters, our oyster beds have a history that dates back to 1189.

In an age when much of the food we eat is the subject of controversial methods of rearing and preserving, we are proud to be a company that delivers fresh products without the need for any additives or preservatives. In fact the products we supply have high levels of many beneficial minerals and nutrients as can be seen under product information page of the products we supply.

In this year Richard I granted the Borough of Colchester the rights to the fishery in return for sending men to help build Dover Castle, and Colchester Oyster Fishery holds the lease.
The company is recognised worldwide as a supplier of the finest Scottish and Canadian Lobster, Crab, Clams, Langoustine and Oysters.
The Fishery is based on Mersea Island, a small island 8 miles south of Colchester, connected to the mainland by a causeway that is covered at springtides.
At this location overlooking the Pyefleet Creek, surrounded by unspoilt salt marshes and a bird sanctuary we grow, grade and store our shellfish.
